I certainly can understand Tutor's concern regarding the costs of the French seminar. What one has to realize is that the French Judo Federation is the largest and richest judo federation in the world. My understanding is that the majority of French participants to these seminars do not pay these costs out of their own pockets. I have seen during these seminars invoices in envelopes being distributed accompanies by certain comments that suggest to me that somehow the "départements", which is the equivalent of the German "Landverein" seem to have a system through which French teachers are funded for these seminars. Clearly, foreign participants may be in a very different structure, depending on the standard procedures that exist in their federation. On the other hand, I know that some participants at the Kôdôkan International Summer Kata Course in Tôkyô sometimes also have their complete travel, lodging and registration fee paid for by their national federation; this obviously does not apply to all members of that national federation, but some federation tend to dispatch a couple one or two people who may fulfill the role of national or regional kata teacher at home, as well as some of their most promising athletes. I guess that the argument which these athletes and officials present to their federation is not any different from the argument that has long been accepted by federations from their elite shiai athletes, namely that without expert training they can't be expected to win medals during tournaments, irrespective of whether these are shiai contests or kata contests. So, it is reasonable to require some financial support from the Federation, the more because federations in most countries receive free money from the government meant for enhancing the performance level of their athletes and in this way increase the prestige for the country.

If one has to pay for jûdô activities out of one's own pocket, it becomes a whole different picture, and not very different from school education, elitarianism is then getting infused with only those who are most affluent being able to afford such high costs.

As we all know, commitment and integrity is not understood by federations in the same way, and even today there are still federations who rather spend lots of money to ensure top officials such as president and secretary general to travel business class and stay at 5 start hotels, instead of using that money to the benefit of their athletes and the common good.

Besides the financial part of the equation, when having to pay personally such considerable amounts, one will and need to ask himself what will I be getting out of my experience ? If one has attended a specific seminar before, one already has some kind of idea, but without that, there is some uncertainty. As Tutor and myself know very well, one could say that the lower one's level in kata, the easier it is to find instruction from which you will benefit, and the higher your level the more difficult it is to get the kind of instruction you need. In reality though, this equation is more complicated, because when only or mostly lowly qualified teachers teach kata to unexperienced students, there is a risk of developing the wrong attitude, the wrong approach, and many mistakes. With 'mistakes' I am not referring to certain angles and steps, but 'fundamental' mistakes with regard to riai and what it is why one practices kata and what one is actually practicing.

This is not a joke. In my personal view the situation is getting worse and worse, because of time advancing. We see this also at the Kôdôkan, the old generation, the one's who still personally new the legendary names of the past, is 85-95 years old. The young generation for years has been involved in copy cat training, attempting to mimick and outside form that meets x-number of remarks and guidelines. However, oftentimes they no longer have any idea what and why they are doing it, what it means, and judo-wise it is often very poor having nothing to do anymore with what kata is and why it was created. Even the recent EJU expert committee contains people who are merely 35 years old, nidan, never been to Japan, never trained in Japan, don't speak, understand of read a word of Japanese. What message can they transfer, what are they able to teach under the term 'kata'. In time their students will be the experts, and if one is patient enough, nothing essential will remain. The majority in the end will start to think that if you can do uki-otoshi exactly as on the Kôdôkan nage-no-kata DVD that you then do a perfect job, and fewer will be those that still have the level of insight so they can say, if you can do uki-otoshi exactly as on the Kôdôkan nage-no-kata DVD then you have given the proof that you suck at jûdô and simply do not master uki-otoshi, as what happens there is impossible and merely a result of uke's synchronized jumping. But who still has the confidence and know-how to say so and step forward and also show how the technique truly is and needs to be done ? If you wait long enough: nobody. The nonsense of today, will be the standard of tomorrow.

The overall dilution of Kanô's jûdô is even very tangible in Japan. The sportification of jûdô for 60 years focused entirely on shiai contests, but now also heavily affects kata. In Japan, the eagerness to score and win medals is weighting heavier than principle. The resistance against IJF domination is getting weaker: increasingly grey/red tatami are being replaced by green/yellow tatami, blue gi are becoming less unacceptable, and so are rash guards and T-shirts under the gi. We see parallel "evolution" in jûdô principles. In jûdô shiai contests, the evolution since long has been that splendid technique the kind of Mifune or Okano, was no longer a necessity and the audience today applauds equally hard if an opponent is thrown flat on his back with nothing but pure physical power, which will get the same ippon score as a technical technique. When the principles and riai of kata are no longer understood by those teaching it, an expectation that those practicing it would know, becomes unrealistic. Without deviating the discussion, these are questions that should pertain to considering to attend or not to attend seminar and if so, which seminar. Even more so, my point was to llustrate that the simplified reasoning that the less advanced people benefit from any kata teaching is perhaps not as straightforward as it may seem ...

Re: Videos von Kata-Lehrgängen mit Kodokanlehrern

Beitrag von tutor! »

Personally I have mixed feelings about the video medium obtained from kata seminars as educational material.

With regard to the Kôdôkan International Summer Seminars, most of the videos on YouTube are very lengthy. I am not sure if and who will watch a 3-hour or even longer video on kata.

The videos from France have a different approach and were heavily edited. In some cases, all the practice by the participants was eliminated resulting in a video that contains nothing but the comments and information provided by the clinician. This then resulted in instances were it appeared as if the clinician was doing nothing else but sometimes talking for 20 minutes, which is not what happened in reality. The view of the producers obviously was that they kept only the most essential stuff and deleted everything else, but the view of someone who was not there might be a lenghty boring lecture. It is difficult.

It is also difficult to correctly capture on video everything else beyond the mere mechanical and visible movements. An expert videographer can make a poor seminar exciting, and a lousy amateur videographer, who trembles, is poorly positioned, etc, can make an excellent seminar into a lousy video experience. Especially for the advanced kata were mental aspects play an increasingly important role video recordings often fail to capture these aspects.

Lastly, a major problem remains that people who watch videos have a tendency to reprocess what they see through their own limitations of comprehension, something that is less the case when really present. What I mean is that the majority of jûdôka today unfortunately misunderstand kata as "demonstrations", something that is done for other people, and something that an audience needs to watch, and subsequently evaluate on a standard from poor to bad. When that tone is unconsciously set the entire video experience becomes redefined. I personally tend to teach in a very different way then the standard way adhered to by the Kôdôkan and most clinicians, where kata typically starts with "demonstration" and your salutes to a shômen. In this way I try to break the preoccupation of participants that cannot think of kata but as demonstrations. Nevertheless, 99% of those watching a seminar like that videotapes, will still miss the point and might even fastforward such a video trying to locate what they always are looking for, i.e. the ... "demonstration".

As far as those who are the clinicians, clearly it is essential that they keep developing themselves further. More critical is how such development is achieved. This is not any different from the school system. Any person with expertise does not evolve to that expertise simply by sitting on school benches. There is a stage in life of formal schooling, where on is part of a class. Ideally at that stage one gets theory, practice, and other pedagogical forms which are then evaluated by the teacher. Depending on the complications of the topic, extensive areas such as engineering or medicine will take years on the school benches. After that, one reaches basic accomplishments, but is far from an expert. If one desires further expertise, other ways of education will become necessary, such as personal apprenticeships, where one has individual supervision engages in a small area of focus, runs experiments, and has these evaluated by a group of experts. When one finishes this, one has higher expertise than those with the basic group training on the school benches, but one still is far from accomplished. ONe only has a proficient basis.

This is even so for randori aspects. Great champions typically are between 22-30 years old when they reach their physical zenith, simply because of physical and physiological capacities. However, if one continues training jûdô it takes many more years before reaching the maximum technical understanding and capacity. Usually this is reached only long after one's competitive career has ended, at a point that one no longer has those athletic capacities. This is not any different with kata. That apparent paradox is present during demonstration of kata, and clearly requires a sharpness of the mind and comprehension that exceeds that of those who are present and still focusing on the mechanics.

The quality of the teachers, and especially the lack of evolution, remains no doubt a problem. However, there is a less friendly sounding factor that the majority of jûdôka have a hard time accepting, even more so with kata than with randori, namely that people not just have motor limitations, but also intellectual limitations. I have over decades observed that there is a point where most jûdôka simply quit, because going beyond a certain level requires a commitment they are not willing to provide. Jûdôka seem to find it more inviting to spend extra hours in a gym to lift weights than to practice technique, but they still prefer putting in extra hours of technical training on a tatami, than what is necessary in order to expand their intellectual limitations. It is a delicate issue, but it is a fact. When I teach students at university I tell them from the start: look you all have different capacities, and intellect will be a genetic determining factor. Some will have to work very hard to reach a point that comes easy for others. Students can still accept that point. What they have a much harder time accepting is when you say: "Look there is a point that you likely will never reach, no matter how hard you practice, you simply lack the intellectual capacity". Nevertheless it is the blunt truth and equally applies to jûdô. It is a dreadful prospect though: to study something that one is likely to never master. Nevertheless it is so in most art forms too. Hundreds of thousands of people have some form of music education, but virtually no one will ever evolve to the level of true mastership of the violin or piano. Why ? Because they simply do not have the inborn capacities, period. Teaching and prractice can overcome only part of those limitations. Most jûdôka find it easier to accept should you tell them that no matter what they do, they never will win an Olympic medal. The evaluation of jûdô shiai after all is very clear. Put them against a jûdôka of higher skill and it will soon be obvious who is first on their bakc on the ground. In kata this limitation seems far less accepted, possibly because the result and comprehension of kata is far less clear, and limited by one's own knowledge. To put it simply, the lower that knowledge the less one sees, and the higher that knowledge the more one sees. There exists no good transferable evaluation model for kata that transgresses the limitations of one's own comprehension, and attempts to do so are often worse that the issue they attempt to address. Is missing a technique in a kata really a "serious mistake" ? Not necessarily. Missing a technique does not directly injury the riai of the kata to the extent that simply not comprehending the riai does. In other words violations of riai are far more serious than missing a technique. However, if the biggest idiot can note missing a technique, but only the most experienced would be able to properly gauge the estent to which any kata adheres to the riai of that kata.

The videos from France have a different approach and were heavily edited.

It is also difficult to correctly capture on video everything else beyond the mere mechanical and visible movements. An expert videographer can make a poor seminar exciting, and a lousy amateur videographer, who trembles, is poorly positioned, etc, can make an excellent seminar into a lousy video experience. Ja.

This is even so for randori aspects. Great champions typically are between 22-30 years old when they reach their physical zenith, simply because of physical and physiological capacities. Dito,
meine Gedanken - mein Reden.

Passt doch gut ins Bild. Die erste, ernste Verletzung mit 28J. ... und dann regelmäßig, phasenweise im 1/2 Jahresabstand ...

In diesem Alter besitzt man noch keinen "scharfen Verstand", man will kämpfen ... true, at this stage, Kata is still an mechanically behavior ... later on ...

The quality of the teachers, and especially the lack of evolution, remains no doubt a problem.

Virtuoso in itself is detrimental to both music and kata

I agree with some points, I disagree with others.

Let's revisit this problem in 5 or 10 years, and see what evolution will bring.

These original descriptions do not exist in published translations, but they do exist, and I collected them for all kata. There also exist handwritten notes by Kanô on several important things. Those are the musical notes of jûdô kata. Jûdô urgently requires a return to the "Urfassung" and "Originaltext" of kata decanted of the many obsessive frivolities we see today.

In any case, recently I happened to see a Koshiki-no-kata by two relatively young people. They made numerous mistakes against the "musical notes" of Koshiki-no-kata and ignored about every point they would emphasize in the Kôdôkan video, booklet or seminar, yet in terms of riai they did so much better than any of the Kôdôkan 7th of 8th dan I have seen. They had studied in Japan in a variety of arts but never at the Kôdôkan. They were on the right track because not hampered by things that are redundant at that point, they abandoned themselves to the core of the kata, pure honest kata. It was a rare indication of true kata. From there on, all the rest can be now be taught, and I am convinced they would make it. Let's hope, although I fear it may never happen as they are no longer in Japan and do not even realize the value of what they have accomplished.
Ist davon ein Video verfügbar?

the biggest difference is that the majority of rules, and supposed-things-that-need to-be-there-because-if-not-it-would-be-a-mistake are absent because historically they never existed. Examples of this are in some techniques the KDK now teaching simply placing the hand against the hip of uke instead of grabbing the belt.

Yes, it exists, but as with so many materials not commonly known much of the material I am referring to is either protected by copyright, private ownership often of people who trusted me with these materials as part of providing unknown sources for my research purposes, sometimes people who were part of that original committee (there are still people alive who did not represent the KDK), sometimes others, people who are fed up with the current situation, but also people fearing retaliation and retribution or already have been retaliated against since the world of jûdô is a particularly nasty world. I may be able to show some of this material at a seminar, research meeting or conference, but I cannot put it on the Internet or E-mail.
